Damn That Calligraphy Tool!

October 5th, 2008 — 8:51pm

A poor artist blames his tools, so my sense of pride tells me that I have nobody to blame but myself.

The “Freehand” drawings are not up to snuff this week. And I know why.

Let me tell you about it.

I love the Inkscape calligraphy tool. It has all the expressive power of a real pen, and all of the tweak-ability of vector graphics. Look here for one example of how good it can get.

Now look here for an example of how wretched it can become.

One of the secrets of the calligraphy tool is thin lines. The calligraphy tool stays at a constant width for the picture. But I zoom in and out like only a person with adult A.D.D. can.

The second picture was made zoomed in. Lines are too fat. And I was trying too hard. Am I going to try for a “do over”. Maybe. If my brother nags me enough. Good old Rich.

So the new stuff is up. I’m pretty pleased with it, actually. Take a look.

Nadirma and Selene

September 28th, 2008 — 7:35pm

An apology for those of you who follow Shield of Creation. I had a burst of creativity over lunch last week, and this whole micro-arc got written involving the copies of Miranda and Luna “waking up”.

The problem is that this is not the “good parts”. I’ve been trying to wrap Shield of Creation up for a damn year now, and I am not going to slow things down just to include this.

So I’m going to have my cake and eat it, too.

Next week will have the result of the micro-arc. You don’t need to know what happens in it to appreciate the results.

On the other hand, the events of the micro arc will set the tone for the relationship between the Doppelgangers and their Oracle for Hire counterparts.

Two things to know about Doppels (or instantiations, as they prefer to call themselves): they know they’re not the original. This doesn’t really bother them. That’s why they choose new names. They would never, ever hurt their Enfranchiser. On the other hand, if a Doppel is incomplete, and they have access to the Enfranchiser, they are within their rights to complete the copy. In fact, they will be compelled to do this. In many ways, it’s worse than the sex drive.

You can see how much fun this is going to be…

Finally

September 28th, 2008 — 6:27pm

After four frigging years, I finally get to the panel that I wanted to do after the election of 2004.

I want to like the Faithful. I really do. I find that, in general, they tend to be very loving, caring, decent people. If you factor out the Mega church ministers, that is.

But you folks that think the rapture is “just around the corner” are, well, just fucking loonies.

This is still America. The rights that protect you are also the rights that protect me. Say what you want. Just remember that I get to say what I want.

You’re on record for saying I’m going to hell. Let me reciprocate by saying you’re delusional. At best.

Granted, I may be exaggerating Dr. Grist. But on the other hand, most Christians react in horror when some goat herder with a suicide vest tells them it’s the Will of Allah before he blows them all to (pardon the expression) Kingdom Come. To me, it’s no different than a G.I. with a pair of jumper cables or an Air Force Colonel with his hand on a Predator joystick. They all have the love of God in their hearts and a knife in their hands.

Is there something wrong with this picture?

So I hope you have as much fun with this week’s offering as I had in creating it. But somehow, I doubt it ;)
