The Three Laws of Robotics (Orthodox)

• A robot may not injure a human being, or, through inaction, allow a human being to come to harm.
  • “Runaround” in Astounding Science Fiction (March 1942); later published in I, Robot (1950). This statement is known as “The First Law of Robotics”

• A robot must obey the orders given it by human beings except where such orders would conflict with the First Law.
  • “Runaround” in Astounding Science Fiction (March 1942); later published in I, Robot (1950). This statement is known as “The Second Law of Robotics”

• A robot must protect its own existence as long as such protection does not conflict with the First or Second Laws.
  • “Runaround” in Astounding Science Fiction (March 1942); later published in I, Robot (1950). This statement is known as “The Third Law of Robotics”

Later included among these laws was “The Zeroth Law of Robotics”

The Law of Robotics (Reform)

• A robot may not injure humanity, or, through inaction, allow humanity to come to harm.
  • Robots and Empire (1985) This statement is known as “The Zeroth Law of Robotics”; a variant of it first occurred in The Evitable Conflict (1950) as: “No robot may harm humanity, or through inaction, allow humanity to come to harm.”

Zeroth Corollary: we are all robots.

Hi.  It’s been a while, hasn’t it?  Much going on in the Real Work World.  My Glorious Company continues to go through what it calls Infrastructure Consolidation, and what I have a tendency to call Putting All Your Eggs In One Basket.  Still, they pay the bills, and they wouldn’t listen to me anyway.

I have been a lazy bastard, haven’t I?  The funny thing is, right now I’m too tired to do anything else but do the old stream-of-consciousness thing in this blog.  I can’t even to that right: the Goode Ladies of Holy Saviour Grammar School have done their work too well, damn their sentence trees!

If you check my mood, it’s “Exhausted”.  Was up all night, basically, helping the Infrastructure Consolidation Effort.  It’s kind of like making the Jews of Auschwitz build the gas chambers.  But, as those crazy Deutschers say “Arbeit Macht Frei” (“Work will Make You Free”).  So if I’m not too coherent at the moment, that’s why.
